The Master’s degree programme in Human-Machine Communication focuses on the improvement of communication between humans and computers, for example by using language and speech technology or by developing simulation models of users.
The master HMC is aimed at improving the communication between human and machine, for example by applying language and speech technology or by developing simulation models of users. Groningen distinguishes itself by paying more attention to understanding of natural cognition and to cognitive modelling. Besides that there are more subjects on communication, linguistics and linguistic applications. The study is a unique combination of artificial intelligence, cognitive psychology and language and speech technology.
The Master’s programme consists of seven compulsory core modules (35 ECTS, optional modules (40 ECTS), and a Master's thesis (45 ECTS). Part of the Master's thesis can consist of an internship.
Requirements for admission to our Master's program in Human-Machine Communication are a demonstrated knowledge of the foundations of cognitive psychology, artificial intelligence, statistics and research methods and computer programming. A Bachelor's degree in Artificial Intelligence from any Dutch university guarantees admittance. Applicants having a foreign Bachelor's degree in Artificial Intelligence or a Dutch or foreign Bachelor's degree in a related topic like Psychology, Cognitive Science, Computer Science, Movement Science, Industrial Design or Engineering can be suited for our Master's program as well. However, these applicants may be required to correct deficiencies in the above areas in the first part of their stay in Groningen, which will extend their Master's program with a few weeks or months.
Language requirements
As the language of instruction in both our Master's programs is English, a paper TOEFL-score of 580 (244 for the computer version) or an IELTS score of at least 6.5 is required for admission.
