The International Max Planck Research School for Maritime Affairs at the University of Hamburg was established in April 2002 by the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science, in co-operation with the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law (Hamburg), the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (Heidelberg), the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (Hamburg) and the University of Hamburg.
The Research School has set up a unique interdisciplinary Ph.D. program. The School's researchers cover the legal, economic, ecological and geophysical aspects of the use, protection and organization of the oceans.
The School provides extensive research capacities as well as its own teaching curriculum. In addition, the researchers can use the facilities of other institutions of the Law of the Sea, such as the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS), with whom a co-operation has been established.
The School bolsters interdisciplinary research. Its researchers work in the fields of law, economics and natural sciences.
