Joint Honours combinations
You can study Sociology as part of a Joint Honours degree with the following subjects:
Studying sociology at Birmingham gives you an exciting opportunity to explore the unprecedented social changes reshaping the world today. Their BA in Sociology has been ranked as a leading programme in the country in the Guardian surveys of British universities in each of the last six years.
This programme provides students with the knowledge and skills to critically engage with key issues facing contemporary societies, such as: the changing nature of work, gender roles, sexuality and family life; questions of identity and culture in increasingly diverse multiethnic societies; the nature and implications of globalisation; the role of the media and new information technologies; and the impact of changing lifestyles and patterns of mobility and consumption.
They place a strong emphasis on your acquisition of research skills and throughout the programme you will receive training in research methods, which aims to equip you to carry out your own research. In your final year you will have the chance to research and write a dissertation on a topic of your own choice, with support and guidance from our teaching staff – themselves active researchers.
First year
In your first year you will gain an introduction to Sociology, Media, Culture and Society, and Multiculturalism – as well as the skills and methods that sociologists use to study the social world. In addition, you can select optional courses from within or outside the department (for example, languages, politics, economics, social policy, history or African studies).
Second year
The second year builds on the foundations of the first year by developing your understanding of sociological theory, analysis, skills and methods. You will have the option to take further courses in areas such as gender, ethnicity, media or contemporary culture, as well as courses from outside the department.
Third year
In addition to carrying out your independent dissertation in the third year, you will study Contemporary Social Theory and select courses from a wide range of options covering gender, sexuality, the family, ethnicity, urban sociology, film, the body, popular music, cultural theory, youth, the environment, political sociology, and the public domain.
Teaching and assessment
Teaching is typically delivered via weekly lectures, seminars or workshops. You will also have opportunities to do specialist training in their computer labs or project work. Generally, courses are assessed by a combination of written assessments and examinations, with some including assessment of individual or group presentations or visual work.
Career opportunities
Besides the knowledge of contemporary society you acquire through your studies, you will also develop skills including: critical thinking; using information technologies to support your work; carrying out independent research; and communicating effectively through written work and oral presentations.Such skills will equip you for a variety of careers.
In recent years their graduates have progressed into a range of occupations including management training, law, market and social research, the media, sales, and teaching, in addition to postgraduate research.
