English at Southampton offers a course which covers a broad timespan, from the Middle Ages to the present day, and also defines its subject broadly, including creative writing and film studies. Characteristic features of our teaching are an emphasis on the relationship of literature to its historical and cultural context, and an interest in theoretical and interdisciplinary approaches.
Film Studies is a relatively new discipline at Southampton, but growing rapidly; Film and English is now the largest combined course with English. On the Film side of your course, you will study cinema from its earliest days to the present, including both Hollywood and European cinema.
A special feature of Film at Southampton is the close collaboration between Film Studies staff in the English and Modern Languages subject areas; this makes it possible for you to widen your experience of film, but also gives the Film and English combination a particularly strong intellectual coherence, reinforced by the use of film in a substantial number of English courses. The main emphasis of the course is theoretical rather than practical, again strengthening its ties with the English side of the course.
The close collaboration between film and English gives this programme a strong intellectual coherence, while the textual and theoretical skills you will learn are designed to complement each other.
