Course overview

Cinema is just over 100 years old; on this course you will study works from the earliest days of its history right through to the most recent releases. You will study of Hollywood Cinema and European Film History, and gain a solid Foundation in Film Theory and critical debates. You will have the opportunity to focus, through the option units, on your personal interests or to study particular areas in detail, and develop your practical French language skills to a high level of proficiency, particularly in relation to text handling and oral communication. Students will take the course over four years rather than three, spending their third year abroad. You may spend the year abroad on a university course or in a work placement, and you will have the opportunity to further your work on Film.

In these combined degrees you can study French/German/Spanish with European film across a range of historical periods. Their emphasis is on the specific cultural context in which the films were produced, as well as the work of key film-makers and their influence on cinema as a whole. This is a four-year programme which includes a year spent studying abroad.

Career Opportunities

By the end of your degree you will have acquired a clear knowledge of world cinema history and the main critical debates that accompany its study at degree level, as well as the ability to undertake independent research. You will be well prepared to take up employment opportunities in the expanding media industries.
