Research training at the GSLS follows a set of basic principles:

- The most important part of the doctoral work is original scientific research.
- Individual research is embedded within a strong peer network and is monitored by an individual supervisory committee of three principal investigators.
- Accompanying research training elements ensure a high quality doctorate.
- Research training may include the acquisition of basic knowledge commensurate with individual needs.
- In addition, the GSLS provides a broad spectrum of activities that widen the scientific horizon, improve professional skills and boost employability inside and outside academia.
